Manjanggul Cave at a glance

Manjanggul is a lava tube, a long tunnel formed by flowing lava. The cave was closed after a rockfall at the end of 2023 and reopened in May 2026, after the paths were improved.

Only part of the cave is open. Of roughly 7.4 km in total, you can walk about 1 km from entrance 2. At the end of the visitor area stands a lava pillar of about 7.6 m. Bats live mostly in the closed sections, so do not count on seeing any. The cave is also a stop on Jeju east day tours, together with Seongsan Ilchulbong and a Haenyeo performance.

What you see inside the lava tube

The visitor path follows the tunnel and passes lava forms and rock shapes, such as a boulder that looks like a turtle. The walk ends at the tall lava pillar. The tunnel is cool inside, so bring a warm jacket and wear sturdy shoes.

Free explanations are offered on site during the day. If you want one, arrive before 16:00.

Rules and practical tips

Four things to sort out before you go.

What not to bring

High heels, pets and food brought from outside are not allowed in the cave.

By bus

One route from the airport runs by bus 101 to Gimnyeong Transfer, then 201 to Manjanggul-ipgu, then 711-1 or 711-2 to Manjanggul. From the stop it is about 4 minutes on foot. Check the current timetable for each connection.

Plan the day

Seongsan Ilchulbong and the ferry to Udo are also on the east side. Read the Seongsan Ilchulbong guide and the Udo guide to fit them in.

With a car

Parking is free. See car rental and buses for licence rules.

Manjanggul and the World Heritage listing

Jeju's natural World Heritage site is called Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes. It was inscribed in 2007 and includes the Hallasan Natural Reserve, Seongsan Ilchulbong and the Geomunoreum lava tube system. Not every landscape or beach on the island belongs to it, so do not assume that every place you pass is part of the listing.

For your own visit, the practical point is simpler: the open part of Manjanggul is a short section of a much longer tube. Keep expectations in line with that, and use the rest of your day for other stops.
