Choosing a base on Jeju
Jeju is a large island, and where you sleep decides how much time you spend on the road. There is no single right area. Think of five bases: Jeju City, Seogwipo, Jungmun, Aewol and Hamdeok. Each fits a different plan.
Jeju City is the practical choice for arrivals. The airport connects to the city, and the Dongmun traditional market is a short ride away. Seogwipo is the usual base for the south, with the Maeil Olle Market in the center and two waterfalls nearby. If your days are mostly day trips, compare the Jeju day tours first, because the pickup area can decide your base.
This page names areas, not hotels. Rates, free rooms, minimum stays and local fees change by season, so check them with the place you book. For the weather that affects your choice, see Jeju weather by month.

Jeju City, Seogwipo or Aewol compared
What each base is close to.
| Area | Good for | Close to |
|---|---|---|
| Jeju City | Arrivals, markets, an easy first night | The airport connection, Dongmun market and its evening market at Gate 8 |
| Seogwipo | Southern day trips, evening walks | Maeil Olle Market, Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang waterfalls |
| Jungmun | The waterfall and coast area in the south | Cheonjeyeon waterfall, airport bus 600 |
| Aewol | A base on the west side of the island | The west coast |
| Hamdeok | A beach stay in summer | The Hamdeok beach, which is in the 2026 swim season plan |
For most first-time visitors, Jeju City for the first and last night and Seogwipo for the south is a good split. If you only want one base, choose by the main thing you plan to do.

The areas in more detail
What to weigh for each one.
Jeju City
Pick Jeju City if your flight lands late or leaves early, or if you want a market dinner on arrival. The Dongmun market has an evening market near Gate 8, with pork and kimchi rolls and abalone gimbap. Do not assume a particular hotel is close to the airport, and check the distance of the one you book.
Jeju food guide โSeogwipo
Seogwipo works well for the south. The Maeil Olle Market is in the center and open all year, and Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang are the nearby city sights. Buses 611, 612, 641, 642 and 880 run to the Cheonjiyeon terminus. Seogwipo is a good base for southern visits, but not automatically for every summit trail.
Jeju waterfalls โJungmun
Cheonjeyeon waterfall lies in the Jungmun area, and the airport bus 600 serves it. Use Jungmun for waterfall and coast stays. Hotel quality and private beaches are not promised by the area, so check each place.
Aewol
Aewol is the west-coast base in this guide. Aewol has many places to stay. Check current reviews and the transfer time from the airport before you book.
Hamdeok
Hamdeok is a beach, and the 2026 swim season ran from 24 June to 6 September with regular hours of 10:00 to 19:00. The choice of places to stay and their prices vary, so check before you book. See Jeju beaches for the season and safety rules.
Reaching Hallasan from your base
For hikers using buses.
The Seongpanak trailhead is served by bus. Bus 281 takes about 45 minutes from the Jeju Bus Terminal and about 50 minutes from the Seogwipo Bus Terminal. Bus 181 from the airport takes about 35 minutes. The route can differ by direction, so do not assume the same bus returns you. Check the current timetable before you go, and read the Hallasan hike page for reservations and start times.
Questions to ask before you book
Details that differ by place.
Is parking included?
Do not assume parking is free or included. If you rent a car, ask the place before you book. The car rental and bus page covers licence rules.
What are the fees and minimum stay?
Local fees and minimum stays are not the same everywhere. Ask for the full price for your dates.
How far is the nearest bus stop?
If you travel without a car, a short walk to a bus stop matters more than a nicer room. Ask for the distance and check the current timetable.
Where to stay in Jeju: frequently asked questions

It depends on your plan. Jeju City suits arrivals and the Dongmun market. Seogwipo suits the south, with the Maeil Olle Market and the Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang waterfalls close by.
Where should I stay for the waterfalls?
Seogwipo is close to Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang. Jungmun is the area of Cheonjeyeon waterfall, which the airport bus 600 serves.
Can I stay without a rental car?
Yes, if you choose a base with bus links and plan day trips around it. Buses 281 and 181 reach the Seongpanak trailhead for Hallasan. Check the current timetables first.
Which hotel do you recommend?
